I’ve walked past The Millennium Hotel on George Square numerous times, all the while peaking through the glass windows at the diners. It is a place that I had never really thought about eating in as Glasgow has an abundance of great restaurants. That was until I was asked to visit the hotel and meet executive head chef Jean-Paul Giraud over dinner.
Only a stones throw away from Queen Street Station, The Brasserie on George Square couldn’t be in a better location if it tried, right in the heart of Glasgow. The hotel is always filled to the brim with tourists and business travellers alike. My mom and I were welcomed by the Brasserie Manager and shown to our table in the conservatory overlooking George Square. The perfect location for people watching as you eat.
Chef Giraud developed the Brasserie menu, which reflects his French training, upbringing and incorporates the best seasonal Scottish produce. Just by looking at the menu and décor, you can tell that it has French cuisine at its core.
To start, I opted for the Thai Fish Cakes which were served with some salad leaves and beautifully decorated dressing. I never normally order fish cakes but I loved these. They were very light and flavourful. Sadly, after a few mouthfuls, they were finished. They were extremely small and I wish they were either bigger or I had more. I would definitely order these again.
My mom went out of her comfort zone and ordered the Asparagus and Mozzarella Salad. Light, refreshing, seasonal and very colourful, she enjoyed every mouthful. I was actually surprised she ordered this as it is not something she would normally eat.
For main course, I stuck with the fish theme and tried Sea Bream which was served on a bed of wilted spinach and crushed potatoes. It was the first time I had ever tried this type of fish, I don’t generally eat fish but I’m trying to force myself to consume more for the Omega 3. I also want to push my comfort zone with seafood and I’m glad I did. The fish was cooked beautifully, very meaty and presented beautifully. I loved the flavours of the tomato and olives alongside the fish. I’m personally not a fan of crushed potatoes so left most of them. Once again, I could gladly order this dish again.
My mom opted for Catalan Chicken which was nestled on top of sautéed potatoes, chorizo and a tomato sauce. This was a dish I wanted to order myself before I decided upon the fish. The chicken breast on bone was a great size and cooked well. The chorizo added a good balance of flavour to the dish along with the tomato sauce. I would have preferred more vegetables on the plate, but these could be ordered on the side if you wished.
Sadly during our main course, we got a phone call informing us that a very close family friend passed away that afternoon. It put a downer on what was a delicious meal. After asking my mom if she wanted to stay a little longer for dessert, we agreed after making more necessary phone calls.
After a break, our desserts arrived. I ordered the Warm Chocolate Pudding which came smothered in a rich chocolate sauce. The chocolate cake was surprisingly light albeit a little dry at the sides. After a few mouthfuls, it became a little too sickly for me. It was delicious though, sadly just a little too rich for me!
My mom ordered Rhubarb and Custard Tarts. She was met with two small homemade cinnamon tarts lined with a compote and cream. Delicate, crumbly pastry. Yum! They tasted very good, were a perfect size and great for stealing a little bit. If we were at home, I’d put down the fork and stuff one into my mouth with no regrets!
Overall, I enjoyed my visit to The Brasserie and I wouldn’t hesitate on returning under better circumstances. I also hear that they do a great Afternoon Tea and I’m a sucker for dainty sandwiches and cakes, so that is next on my list!
